From adolescence to adulthood I have always been artistic and decisive. I never knew just how much my life would change when I left for college in 2006. From being on my own at the age of 19, having multiple jobs, and not being able o finish school in the earlier part of my 20's; to getting back in to school at the age of 24 carrying multiple jobs and making ends meet; I realized that the choices that I made from the moment I walked across that stage to graduate high school have shaped my life. I also realized that my next decision, step in the process, or word that I spoke over my life was pivotal to my direction. Life has always been about making choices at every turn. The pursuit of happiness became a part of my journey of self-actualization when I had to focus on what success felt like instead of what it brought me. I cannot tell you how important that was for me. You can create any vision or mood board under the sun; afterall it is important to be able to see what it is that you want your life to look like, but focusing on what you want your futur to feel like will allign your life with what is true to who you are on the inside. Who we are at our core is way more efficient at identifying what we need than our greed, pride, or ego will ever be.  I went from being completely destitute and unable to continue my collegiate career at 19 to building a fashion-lifestyle blog, Brown Sugar INK, getting back into school and providing a life for myself, at 25. Today, I am 29 years old and I am a year from graduating, I have a well paying full-time job with benefits, and I am starting another blog! A Dreamer's Guide to Leaping, highlights the lessons I have learned on the road to pursuing my dreams, and taking that infamous leap. Ask me any and everything about my journey and what I have learned. Ask me more about my new blog A Dreamer's guide to Laping coming out June 10th. A Dreamer's Guide to Leaping speaks more to life, choices, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Ask me anything about fashion, dressing and interviewing to land the job. I have tons of information on my blog Brown Sugar INK as well!!

What role should the artist have in society and why do you believe this to be so?
Apr 19, 4:17PM EDT1

Hi Rylouise777! This is important question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!

I love this question because it rarely gets asked of everyday artists. This is such an important because over the centuries we habe played such an important role in society.

As artist we have a responsibility to personify, capture, and provide clarity and space for resolution. We are really good at giving life to moments in time and adding more meaning to them. The artists perspective is often the one that goes overlooked but has the most insight because we have the ability to talk about what is going on admist the happening. We shed light on darkness because we see thorough to the opportunities. With that neing said we often can provide a clarity and bridge the gap between two or several perspectives because that is essentially what art is, because there are no real biases in art, only a fusing of ideas and methods of getting to the same message. Currently I am working on several art designs and one is transparency. In this piece I am overlapping geometric shapes. Each shape has it's own color until it overlaps another, then an entirely new and different color is exposed. This speaks to the purpose of the artist in society. We are responsible for exposing those grey areas where new opportunities for insight, unity, and progress can take place. We are and have been so pivotal to the progression lf society. I dont know where the world would be without artistic expression. Great question, let's keep it going!!!!

How do you incorporate feedback into your blog and can you describe a time when you received harsh criticism for your writing?
Apr 19, 3:14PM EDT1

Hi George Lith! This is awesome question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!

It is interesting that you mention feedback. One of the biggest missions of Brown Sugar INK and A Dreamer's Guide to Leaping, is to curate and create a space where people can share how they relate to the content. It is often meant to be an exchange of information. As of late I have only had positive  support from my readers. I have a policy with my blogs where I believe that feedback is gift! The only thing that I ask is that readers keep it cute, constructive, and uplifting! That's it! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I believe that any and everyone has something important and potentially life changing to say,  however delivery can cause the message to be missed. I encourage even those with negative comments to submit their comments I will provide feedback before they are posted. If I feel like their message is not being heard because of their words choice, I will ask for clarification. If at that point the person is not wanting to contribute something constructive or inspiring, their comment won't be posted. Part of being a curator of conversation is managing and taking responsibility for the dialogue shared. Hope this helps!!! Let's keep the conversation going!!!! I loved that question!!!

How should one go about identifying quality creatives to collaborate with when having to work on a design project?
Apr 19, 3:47AM EDT1

Hi STARFALL1! Great question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!

I love this question because it is all about trusting yourself and that A word I love, ALLIGNMENT. I think it is super important that when considering collaborations on design project, you focus on why it is that you want to do a collabo in the first place. I always ask why? What do I hope to achieve? What do I want to contribute (because after all what good is a collabo if it isn't helping your ecosystem)? Does the collabo align with the direction I am going in with the project, does the artist I have chosen perpetuate the mission? This is a biggie, as a designer, writer and artist in general. I need to align myself with another persona that either enhances or matches mission and overall objective. Then once you have answered those questions, you can then assess whether their talent would be a great fit. Most of the time if you have invested in the questions you already know that their aesthetic matches yours. I love collaborations, but I love even more to be able to share dialogue about pieces with depth and great introspection. People who have done their homework are my preferred go to,  not to mention the ones that challenge my current level. Hope this helps!!!! Let's keep this going!!

How do you think mainstream media should change to accommodate the era of recycled and sustainable fashion?
Apr 19, 1:30AM EDT0

Hi Shakeel Ahmad! This is awesome question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!

I think transparency is a vice that the mainstream media should have in their corner. Starting with honesty, clarity, and openness is a way to draw consumers into the message. The message that a circular economy sends about recycled and sustainable apparel and fashions is what will make or break the agenda.

What do you believe your best personal assets that contribute to you being a successful blogger?
Apr 18, 2:55AM EDT1

Hi JENESPULGAR! This is awesome question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!

Being a creative that is inquisitive and intuitive (that was a lot of -ive's), I think blogging and story telling is just my nature. Also the desire to pass on what I know and have learned means everything to me in the cycle of creation and being a contributing human being. Also i believe my ability to be resourceful and think outside of the box, helps me reinvent myself aswell as my content. I think those are my biggest assets. I loved that question.

Apr 18, 3:07AM EDT0
What are some of the major steps involved in your creative process?
Apr 17, 12:53AM EDT1

Hi Joe! I am glad you asked! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

I love this question. It is very seldom that well known influences, artist, creative's share their journey and process to creating. It is an honor to be able to share mine. Whenever I approach a blog piece, or art work I want to get the most out of what it is I am investing in. I do that by doing tons of research. I believe that research plays a heavy part in the depth and meaning behind almost anything. History gives the present purpose and meaning. Research is huge to me. Another step in the process of creating, a blog piece for instance, is planning. Currently I have 35 pieces I am work on and have broken them down by day and then broken those piece down by content to cover within each individual piece. I take plenty of notes on the thoughts I have. My life is super busy so there may be times where I am sorting mail and (since my mind is always on my crafts) I habe to write it down quickly, which consequently means I habe notes in various places like notebooks scratch paper, sketch books, you be it! When it comes to actually creating I just release! I have planned and done enough research and reflection on what I have done that there is this body of work sitting inside me. It's like giving birth pretty much! The creative process is really a beautiful experience. Thank you so much for that question!

Which current fashion trends are you following and why are they of particular interest to you?
Apr 16, 6:27PM EDT1

Hi Maggie! I am glad you asked! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

This is similar to what Dlanie asked in the feed earlier. The current fashion trends I am seeing on the runway are art-infused designs. Designers are designin fabric has lots of bright colors and lines, as well as themes. One art-infused theme I am seeing in fabric design is retro comic book influence. I love seing fabric designers take pieces of real life photos and artistic deign and fusing them together to create something like a statement piece. This reminds me of my prior statement in response to KNIGHTRIDER , who asked what I feel is essentially timeless in fashion. I think this year designers are really honing in on using art to personify style with statement pieces. It's definetly a trend to watch!

What is one thing that you would change about the fashion industry and why?
Apr 16, 1:31PM EDT1

Hello jquiambs! I am glad you asked! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

This is an awesome and LOADED QUESTION ! There a few things that would change about the fashion industry but to keep this short I am going to provide my top opportunity for improvement in the fashion industry and that is up-cycling and recycling apparel. If we invest in renewable resources and recycle older garments we will cut down on the fashion industries pollution input. Not only will we cut down on that but we will also improve waste management in the industry! I believe this technique will also incorporate some new innovations in the way we view apparel efficiency. Let's keep the conversation going!

What are some of the resources you would recommend to young designers and writers attempting to pursue a career similar to yours?
Apr 16, 11:24AM EDT1

Hello Bojana Pejic! I am glad you asked! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

The first thing I tell anyone looking to be a creative or influential person is to gain stock in knowledge by DOING YOUR RESEARCH. There is nothing better than someone who is invested in the history of their craft. Learning and emersing yourself in the history and culture of your craft will prepare you to talk about it at a much deeper level, but it will also allow you to be able to create pieces and art works of the like with much deeper meaning and richer technique. So I defenitly say that studying to show yourself approved is  amajor source for knowledge. Second, I would try to capitalize on my strengths. For instance, one of my strengths is communication. I understand how to communicate ideas , so writting a blog comes effortless to me. I would build a network or ecosystem of people who are creatives, influencers, or just doing their won thing because they can give you pointers on how and where to start your career as well as how to maximize your experiences and monetize. Hope this helps!!! Get invlve.

What is a primary goal of a designer and what are some of the considerations a designer needs to take into account to produce a good design?
Apr 16, 10:20AM EDT1

Hello Poncjo! Great question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

I love this question, it is super important when considering each design no matter how simple so I am glad you asked! The primary goal of a designer is based on what it is the designer is trying to accomplish. For instance, ifa designer wants to put out a collection of sportswear, then the primary goal the designer has to achieve is making garments that are light weight, breathable, and durable for activity of varius levels. So the idea is that you come up with a purpose and base your main objective off of your purpose. Things to consider when making a great design are functionality; does the garment do what it was designed to do? Wearability. Who and What are you designing for? Remember there is a difference between a runway design and a RTW (ready-to-wear) apparel. Fabric is alwyas a major key to a design. The simplest design can have the highest quality when using a really good fabric. I hope this helps! Feel free to engage!

Hey Guys Cheyenne here! ZARAKEISHA just asked an awesome on how to brand and market environment conscious products as a designer! This is an amazing question with an equally amazing response! Join the conversation! AMA!!!

Apr 16, 10:13AM EDT0
What are some of the ways in which a designer can successfully integrate environmental information into their marketing and what are the factors that will lead such a marketing strategy to success?
Apr 16, 9:46AM EDT0

Hello ZaraKeisha! This is an awesome question! Thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

I love this question because it refers to the very interesting topic of a circular economy I discussed with HONEY BHATTACHARYA earlier when she asked what a circular economy was and the affect it would have on the fashion industries sustainability. The reason why I bring this up is because a circular economy is a remedy for the contribution that the fashion industry is responsible for pollution emissions. The start of creating awareness and giving a designers' clients a reason to care in the first place has to do with branding. A lot of companies are going green. It is difficult or the apparel company to "go green" because of (1) mass production of clothes, because there are more than 5 people in the world that are actaully in need of clothing; (2) larger comapnies prefer to use cheaper labor, etc. A designer is responsible for the message that is communicated to it's buyer. Making a point to advertise the truths and facts surrounding the fashion industry and how these big box and fast fasion stores are consistent with providing lots of merchandise in a sort period of time would be highly effective in creatinga buzz. After the deisgner creates the buzz then they have to suggest that something should be done and provide a reason why the customer should care in the first place. People are inherently good at their core, people want to feel like they have saved the day also. Making your client/consumer feel as though they did something good for the environment and for people is a way to start the branding process for conscious environmental innovation. marketing inside the store (wall/table fixtures, nothing big and obtrusive) should be subtle, less is more here. I hate to sound manipulative, but our brains work twice as hard on the background than they do on the front end. Meaning what is subtle become subconscious and therefore inherent. little tags on clothing or merchandise explaining how environmentally conscious this item is (for instance BPA free stickers on water bottles; I don't know what BPA is but I know it is not good!) sparks interest for the next shopping visit the customer has. At the end of the day what the designer is creating is going to depend on how loud and how aggressive his message is.

Amazing question! Let's keep the conversation going!!!

What strategies do you employ to remain focused and goal-orientated when under pressure to complete a deadline?
Apr 16, 9:00AM EDT1

Hello uisaguelles! This is such a great question, and I am so glad you asked it! Thank you for participating in my AMA. Check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!

My life is beyond hectic. I work for the United States Postal Service (warehouse, not letter carrier) full-time. I also work as a Visual Merchandiser for Victoria Secret part-time, while also being a student, and a manager/contributer of now 2 blogs!! Geesh!! I got tired just running the list! As you can imagine perserverance, consistency, nad discipline are the staples for success, right!? Well I will be honest, I struggle with all of those! I am laughing to myself right now, because I have to be my own manager and advisor and I am always exhausted! Did I mention I have an amazing boyfriend.. In a different city!! So many things to juggle but they all contribue positively to my life! that was a snapshot of my life so that my answer to your question makes a little more since.

I employ 3 or 4 different calendars, and honestly I may encorporate 2 more; one for Brown Sugar INK and another for A Dreamer's Guide to Leaping jsut because all of things I have to stay focused on can't be pilled into one. When it comes to strategizing, I plan. Planning is what keeps me sane, what keeps me motivated, and what helps me build the foundation and set the stage for forming and meeting my goals. I cannot begin to tell you how important calendaring is. I have one giant calendar that hangs on my wall in my office at home. I use both Google calenders( my fav) and the default calendar app on my phone and I have 2 planners. Okay so that is def. 5! I know this sounds crazy but they all serve different purposes and come with great amenities. I also try and make sure that I get sleep which sometimes effects my consistency because I work a 3rd shift job 6 days a week for at least 10 hours (sometimes 12) sleep wins most nights, as it should. Health and Wellness is a major key when it comes to a lifestyle that is a constant pressure cooker! Living the kind of busy life that I do, I have to make sure that I eat and that I try and get sleep along the way. Last Fall and Winter I lost 20 lbs, because I was working and schooling so much that I was to tired to eat most days (yikes! not good, but hey I lost some lbs!) I have many litle qwerks that push me through my tougher times. I promise I will wrap this up, but I want to share this last tip because no one considers this. When my life is about to get crazy ( I know because all 8 million of my calendars tell me so), my house must be clean, for several reasons. First, I thrive best when my environment is structured, clean, and calming. The focus is unreal when I can come home and throw myself into my work, without looking around at a total mess house! Full disclosure, sometimes I get so busy that I don't have time to clean, and that's when it get's really bad, but I jsut push through and do a massive clean. For instance, as I am typing this my house is a complete mess; but what have been doing? working 2 jobs, going to school, preparing for the AMA, and designing a whole new blog while doing promo on social media for this moment to be able to talk with all of you!

In essence, find out what makes you tick and create an environment that makes you want to thrive. Set your goals, plan them out and go for it! Remember do less more often! That is one of the bigger tips that is currently changing the game for me! Thank you for the question and sorry for the novel!!

What are some of the brands you most admire and how do they influence your work as both a writer and fashion designer?
Apr 16, 5:45AM EDT1

Hello Jeanrua! I am glad you asked! I want to first thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

This is a great question, and often a hard one to answer for so many reasons! Fashion is like art, and as an artist it is hard for me to really pinpoint brands that I admire the most, because there are so many that I admire for different reasons that are equally important. I will say that there are brands such as Balmain that I love for their consistency and for their ability to really push the envelope while sticking to what works for their brand. Olivier Rousteing is doing a wonderful job with Balmain. Another brand I love is Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel. I think it is important to highlight who's brand it is because if you know anything about fahsion, you know that designers do change, thus changing the image and direction of the brand. No one does tweed like Chanel, they put it on the map and made insanely royal and feminine and professional. I love how Chanel has evolved as a brand and how they keep the dainty professional woman ahead of the game. Karl has done an amazing job with that! Both brands I have mentioned have taught me the timelessness in consistency and innovation. This is something that as both a creator and aspiring entrepenuer, I believe to be essential. I always keep in the forefront that consistency breeds success which breeds results; and innovation shows you the ways to reinvent yourself while sticking to your purpose. These are all game changing concepts!!

I love the question Jeanrua!!! Let's keep the conversation going!!

What role do you think social media plays in fashion today?
Apr 16, 5:35AM EDT1

Hello Econjulio! This is such an important question because social media is such a game changer! I want to first thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

Social media has played a real part in the way consumers shop and what they look for. With so many bloggers and social media influencers showing thier asthetic, fashion has become this giant conversation and exchange of style. So many new trends and ideas have come from this social media age. Another thing that I think is really dynamic is that we get to see designers fuse their inspiration with their talent. We really get to art imitated by fashion in these curated profile accounts. Instagram is my favorite go to for fashion ideas, neck and neck with Pintrest. I love Pintrest because it is drama free and I can tailor my searches, which is great! Instagram, however is one of those platforms where you get to look into someone elses eye. Often times as a designer if you are creating a mood board, it is easy to go Instagram and see examples of how a perspective IT consumer lives, shops, etc when considering who you audience is and building your ideal loyal customer profile. To make an answer to loaded question short, SOCIAL MEDIA HAS BECOME A HUGE GAME CHANGER FOR THE FASHION INDUSTRY!!! Thank you for the question! Let's keep it the conversation going!!

This is such a great question, I love it!! So my right hand tech is my laptop at the moment because I can connect my awesome bamboo tablet to it and run my programs to sketch. Which pieces are you most proud of in your portfolio, and why?
Apr 16, 3:13AM EDT1

Hi GilbertKoech97! I want to first thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

The piece that I would have to say i am most proud of is my first skirt ever made. I have not been sewing log and I am actaully a rookie (full discolsure). The reason why it is my favorite piece is because I made it with such great attention to detail and not only that, the seams and finishes were actually quite nice  for my first garment. I knew that this was something I had an eye for when I achieved something like this of great quality. I think it also showed me that I have incredible patience and determination under pressure and that's what makes me so successful when it comes to art and design. I am willing to e deligent, but patient to see the work come to life. Great question! Definetely do no hesitate to engage in other questions I have answered! Let's keep the conversation going!

Hello SV9ZIST! I am glad you asked! I want to first thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

I am learning more about higher-end computer aided design at the current moment. Some of the programs that I prefer are Adobe photo shop and AutoDesk to do my sketches. I am sorry I don't have much information about this as I am still learning CAD.

Apr 15, 9:49PM EDT0
What kind of fashion projects are you interested in and why?
Apr 15, 8:25PM EDT1

Hi Paul Murphy! I am glad you asked! I want to first thank you for participating in my AMA. I hope this provided insight check out the other questions, engage, but most importantly get inspired!!

Right now one of the trends in fashion is art-infusion. I am interested in the designers who are influenced by how art mimics life. This references the question that DLANIE17 asked when she wanted to know what trends I am following at the moment. I love curated design collections as well. This is one of the reasons why I love the Met Gala and other fashion shows that showcase piece as though the observer is in a museum. So to answer your question, I am currentl interested in collections inspired by upcycling random materials like metal wire and other recycled produtcs. Thanks for te question, let's keep the conversation.
